This guide explains the F-1 visa process and provides interview preparation tips to help you successfully navigate the visa application process. Please remember that visa issuance is always at the discretion of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you apply.
Step 1: Receive Your Acceptance Letter and Form I-20
After being admitted to Citrus College, the International Student Center (ISC) will issue:
- An Acceptance Letter
- A digitally signed Form I-20
The Form I-20 is required to pay your SEVIS fee and apply for an F-1 student visa.
Step 2: Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee
Before applying for your visa, you must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online.

You will need your SEVIS Identification Number, which can be found in the upper-left corner of your Form I-20.
After payment:
- Save and print your receipt.
- Keep the receipt with your visa application documents.
- Bring the receipt to your visa interview.
Transfer students using the same SEVIS record generally do not need to pay the SEVIS fee again.
Step 3: Schedule Your Visa Appointment
Schedule an F-1 visa interview appointment with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate serving your area.
Requirements vary by country and embassy. Review your local embassy's website carefully and follow all instructions.
Students are generally required to:
- Complete the DS-160 Visa Application
- Pay the visa application fee
- Schedule a visa appointment
- Upload a visa photo (if required)
- Bring all required documentation
Visa appointment availability varies significantly by country, so students are encouraged to schedule appointments as early as possible.

Step 4: Prepare for Your Visa Interview

- Passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended entry date
- Original Form I-20 issued by Citrus College
- Citrus College Acceptance Letter (or proof of enrollment for continuing students)
- Financial support documents
- DS-160 confirmation page

Understand Your Educational Plans
You should be prepared to explain:
- Why you chose Citrus College
- Why you selected your major
- Why you chose to study in the United States
- Your educational goals
- Your career plans after graduation
The interviewing officer wants to understand that your primary purpose for entering the United States is education.
Demonstrate Ties to Your Home Country
F-1 students must demonstrate that they intend to return home after completing their studies.
Examples of ties may include:
- Future employment opportunities
- Family relationships
- Property ownership
- Financial assets
- Business interests
- Long-term career plans
There is usually no single document that proves your ties to your home country. Your responses should clearly explain your future plans and why you intend to return home.
Be Prepared to Discuss Your Financial Support
You should know:
- Who is paying for your education
- Your sponsor's relationship to you
- How tuition and living expenses will be funded
Your answers should be consistent with the financial documents submitted to Citrus College and presented during the interview.
Prepare for an English Interview
Most F-1 visa interviews are conducted in English.
To prepare:
- Practice answering common questions.
- Speak naturally and honestly.
- Avoid memorized speeches.
- Keep responses clear and concise.
Step 5: Attend Your Visa Interview
Most F-1 visa interviews last only a few minutes.
During the interview:
- Speak for yourself.
- Answer only the question being asked.
- Keep responses brief and honest.
- Stay calm and professional.
- Make eye contact when appropriate.
- Listen carefully to the officer's questions.
The final decision regarding your visa application will be made by the consular officer.
Common Interview Questions
Examples of questions include:
- Why did you choose Citrus College?
- Why do you want to study in the United States?
- Why did you choose your major?
- Who is paying for your education?
- What do your parents or sponsors do?
- What are your plans after graduation?
- Do you have relatives in the United States?
- Why not study in your home country?
Employment Questions
Your primary purpose for entering the United States is to study.
While F-1 students may have limited employment opportunities, you should not present employment as your primary reason for coming to the United States.
Questions About Family
If family members are remaining in your home country, be prepared to explain:
- How they will support themselves
- Whether they intend to remain in your home country
- Your plans for your family during your studies
Social Media
The DS-160 visa application asks applicants to disclose social media accounts.
Be sure all information submitted on your visa application and immigration forms is complete, accurate, and truthful.
If You Have Been Denied Before
If you have previously been denied a visa:
- Answer questions honestly.
- Clearly explain any changes since your previous application.
- Bring updated supporting documents if applicable.
A previous denial does not automatically prevent future visa approval.
If Your Visa Appointment Is Delayed
If your visa appointment is scheduled after your program start date:
- Schedule the earliest available appointment.
- Check frequently for earlier openings.
- Request an expedited appointment if available.
- Contact the International Student Center for assistance.
After the Interview
If your visa is approved:
- The embassy may keep your passport temporarily to place the visa inside.
- You may be required to pay a visa issuance fee, depending on your country.
- Digital fingerprints may be collected.
- The embassy will provide instructions for receiving your passport.
Once you receive your passport with the F-1 visa, you may begin making final travel arrangements.
If your visa is not approved:
If your visa application is denied, do not panic. Visa denials can occur for a variety of reasons, including insufficient documentation, concerns regarding financial support, or questions about your plans after completing your studies.
If your visa is denied:
- Request information about the reason for the denial, if provided by the consular officer.
- Contact the International Student Center (ISC) as soon as possible.
- Provide the ISC with any information or documentation you received regarding the denial.
Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to:
- Reapply for an F-1 visa in the future.
- Submit additional documentation before a new visa interview.
- Defer your admission to a future semester and receive an updated Form I-20 if additional time is needed.
The ISC will work with you to review your options and determine the best path forward.
Important Reminder
Admission to Citrus College does not guarantee issuance of an F-1 visa. Visa decisions are made solely by the U.S. Department of State under U.S. immigration law.
Additionally, receiving an F-1 visa does not automatically grant entry to the United States. Students must present the appropriate documents to U.S. Customs and Border Protection upon arrival.
