Course Repetition
A Student may not repeat a course in which they have already received a satisfactory grade of A, B, C, or P, unless the course description in the college catalog states that the course may be repeated for credit or an exemption applies.
Noncredit courses are repeatable.
Please note that course name/numbering sometimes change and a course may be deemed equivalent in the college catalog.
Courses Repeated to Improve a Non-Passing Grade
A student may repeat a course one time when a D, F, NP, W or FW has been earned. No petition is required to repeat a course one time where a non-passing grade was earned. EWs do not count as an attempt.
A student must file a petition with the Counseling and Advisement Center and receive approval prior to attempting a course for a third time (3 Peat). The petition will be considered if the withdrawal or substandard grade was the result of extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances are defined as verified cases of accident, illness or other circumstances beyond the control of the student. If the student earns a non-passing grade on the third attempt, the student may not enroll in that course again unless an exception outlined in AP 4225, AP 4227, AP 4228, or AP 4229 applies.
Course Repetitions Exemptions
A “course repetition” occurs when a student attempts a course and receives an evaluative or non-evaluative symbol for the course (i.e. A, B, C, D, F, FW, W, P/NP, CR/NC, RD, I) and wishes to enroll again in the same course. (Title 5 Section 55040)
Students must use the Course Repetition Form to request to repeat a course due to:
- Significant Lapse of Time
- Extenuating Circumstances
- Students with Disabilities Repeating a Special Class
- Legally Mandated Course
- Significant Change in Industry or Licensure Standards
- Cooperative Work Experience
Please note that repeating a class for the first time due to substandard grade does not require petition and repeating a class for a third time (3 Peat) due to substandard grade requires using the Course Repetition (Third Attempt) petition.
Grade Alleviation
When a D, F, FW or NP is repeated, the units and grade points of the last grade will be used in computing the student’s grade point average at Citrus College. The previous grade will be alleviated as long as no more than two prior grades are alleviated.
The students transcript will show the prior substandard grade and indicate that the grade was alleviated.
A student who subsequently repeats a course at another accredited college may request to alleviate a final grade of D, F, FW or NP earned for the same class at Citrus College. The student must file a petition and verify the grade with an official college transcript. The students transcript will show the prior substandard grade and indicate that the grade was alleviated.
Grade alleviation does not apply when repeating for one of the following exceptions: cooperative experience, disabled student repeating a special class, student repeating a legally mandated course, and student repeating because of a significant change in industry or licensure standard. For repeatable courses, a subsequent passing grade shall alleviate an immediately preceding substandard grade.
