Help with Mixed-Status Families
The Department of Education is temporarily allowing individuals without an SSN to enter and complete the 2024-25 FAFSA. Students and contributors without an SSN must continue to manually enter their tax information. Students without an SSN must verify their eligible noncitizen status through their school before they receive any federal funds.
See 2024-2025 Account Creation Guidance for FAFSA Contributors without SSN for more information.
Students with mixed-status families who are still having issues completing the FAFSA after this announcement, may also complete the California Dream Act Application.
The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is now open for applicants with contributors who do not have a social security number and are unable to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) recently made this option available to allow students to meet the May 2, 2024, state and institutional financial aid priority deadlines.
Students and their non-SSN contributors who choose the CADAA option should continue to pursue the StudentAid.gov account creation and identity verification process to complete the 2024-25 FAFSA and maximize their financial aid opportunities. The CADAA does not provide access to federal student aid.
For more information on how students from mixed-status families can access the California Dream Act Application, visit the CSAC CADAA for Mixed Status Families webpage.
What's Changing
A lot is changing, but the most important things to know right now:
- 2024-2025 FAFSA Contributors and Providing Consent: Every FAFSA contributor, including you, your spouse, a parent, or a stepparent, must sign the FAFSA and give their approval using their own FSA ID. If your contributor doesn't have a social security number, don't worry; they'll be able to create an FSA ID soon. You'll receive more details about this by December 2023. View this article for more details: 2024-2025 FAFSA Contributors and Providing Consent
- The application process is easier by asking fewer questions and letting you easily get your tax info straight from the IRS.
- There is a new way to share data directly with the IRS, and it will take the place of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) that is used now.
-
The new Student Aid Index (SAI) formula, will only consider you in the formula, excluding your siblings who are attending college at the same time. While your sibling will no longer be considered in the SAI formula, the FAFSA will still require you to disclose the total number of people who will be attending college for the academic year in the parent section.
